chmod command is use to change the permissions on files and folders in linux, solaris and unix

This command is used in 2 formats

  1. chmod  ugo +r <File Name>
    • Here u means user. g means group. o means other
    • +r means giving read permission or -r means revoking read permission
  2. chmod 777 <File Name>
    • First 7 is for users
    • Second 7 is for group
    • Third is for other
    • 7 means all the permission that is read(4) write(2) execute(1) 4+2+1 = 7
